ORM Blood Borne Pathogens Training
The following employees are identified as having a high-risk to exposure: Health Services Faculty and Maintenance Staff. High risk employees will be offered a Hepatitis B vaccination and will attend a refresher course on blood borne pathogens annually. All other employees will review Blood Borne Pathogens every three years.
(1) High Risk Exposure
All employees identified as High Risk are to be trained upon initial job assignment and at least annually thereafter. Students, who perform work that is similar to employees covered by this program, must also receive the same training. Training must also be provided, when an existing job task is altered, or when an employee is required to perform a new job task that warrants such training.
(2) Low Risk Exposure
All employees falling within the scope of this program are to be trained upon initial job assignment and at least every three years thereafter. Training must also be provided, when an existing job task is altered, or when an employee is required to perform a new job task that warrants such training.
The Acadiana Technical College Safety Coordinator will ensure training is made available to all campus employees. Employees are not required to participate in a prescreening program, as a prerequisite for receiving hepatitis B vaccinations.
Employee training must include at least the following elements:
- A general explanation of the epidemiology and symptoms of blood borne diseases.
- An explanation of how blood borne pathogens are transmitted.
- An explanation of the employers exposure control plan and the means by which the employee can obtain a copy of the written plan.
- An explanation of the appropriate methods for recognizing tasks and other activities that may involve exposure to potentially infectious materials.
- An explanation of the use and limitation of control measures.
- Information pertaining to the types, use, location, removal, handling, decontamination, and disposal of PPE.
- An explanation of the appropriate action to take and persons to contact in an emergency involving potentially infectious material.
- Information on post-exposure evaluation and follow-up that the employer is required to provide for the employee, following an exposure incident.
- An explanation of the signs and labels and/or color coding.
- An opportunity for interactive questions and answers with the person conducting the training.
- Proper methods for personal hygiene.
- Methods for decontaminating floors, sinks, and other contaminated equipment.
