QUALITIES OF AN ONLINE STUDENT

Be open minded about sharing life, work, and educational experiences as part of the learning process.

The Blackboard forum eliminates the visual barriers that hinder some individuals in expressing themselves.

Be able to communicate through writing.

The Blackboard forum also gives students time to reflect on information before responding. It is critical that students feel comfortable in expressing themselves in writing.

Be Self-motivated and self-disciplined.

With freedom and flexibility of the Blackboard environment comes RESPONSIBILITY! The online process takes a real commitment and discipline to keep up with flow of the online learning process.

Be willing to "speak up" if problems arise.

Many of the non-verbal communication mechanisms that instructors use in determining whether students are having problems are not present in the online paradigm.

Be willing & able to commit to 4 -15 hours per week per course.

Online students experiencing difficulty either with the technology or the course content MUST communicate this immediately!

Be able to meet minimum requirements for the course/program.

Online is NOT easier than traditional classes. It requires MUCH MORE TIME & COMMITMENT!

The requirements for an online course are no less than that of a traditional face-to-face class. The SUCCESSFUL online student will view online as a convenient way to receive an education – NOT an easier way!

Accept critical thinking and decision making as part of the learning process.

Assimilating information & executing the right decisions requires critical thinking.

Have access to a computer and the Internet.

Students MUST have easy access to the necessary equipment and services for participating in an online course/program.

Be able to think ideas through before responding.

Meaningful and quality input into the online classroom is an essential part of the learning process. The testing & challenging of ideas is encouraged; you will not always be right, just be prepared to accept the challenge.

Feel that high quality learning can take place without going to a traditional classroom.

If you feel that a traditional classroom is a prerequisite to learning, you may be more comfortable in a traditional class – online is NOT for everyone!

AN ONLINE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO:

Participate in online class 5-7 days a week

  • Be able to work with others in completing projects
  • Be able to use the technology
  • Be able to meet the minimum standards as set forth by the college
  • Be able to complete assignments on time
  • Enjoy communicating in writing

The online learning process is normally ACCELERATED & requires commitment on the part of the student. You MUST stay up with the class and complete all work on time! You need to want to be there, & need to want the experience.
